Life continues outside of the hospital...school part 1
When it's time to go home from the hospital (and even while you are in the hospital) the world continues to go on. For children, one of the biggest things that they are missing is their day to day of going to school, seeing friends, playing sports, participating in activities and just "being a kid."
For today let's talk about school...
There are a few important things that you as a parent can do to help out your child and the school as well.
1. Communicate with the school - this doesn't just mean your child's teacher but also administration, the school counselor, and even the special education department.
2. Brainstorm with the school - there are a lot of really great ways that your child can keep in touch with their classes. I'll be including some links later on this week to talk about that.
3. Send your child to school when they say they are ready - you might not be ready to send your child back but they might just want to go in for a little while. Of course you never want to hurt your child's health but if they are healthy enough to be home and there's not a fear of them getting sick then send them to school.
4. Invite parents of classmates and friends as well as their children to visit - there's nothing better than seeing a friendly face in the hospital or at home. When your child is able, have their friends come see them in the hospital. It might be scary for those other children at first but it helps to demystify the experience. Have an activity planned for the kids to do. This might give you a break too and an adult to talk to.
We'll be talking about school and getting your child acclimated another day :)
