Take a breath

Last week at church the children's message probably spoke to us adults more than the kids. The pastor took out 4 candy canes, all different sizes. He asked the children to determine which he should give to his daughter...

Of course the children,in fits of laughter, chose the biggest one.

He said "you know what, it doesn't matter. I know my daughter will be thankful for any gift."

He told all of the children that with every gift that they open, take a breath, take it in. Look at the person that gave you the gift, and say thank you. Because no matter what it is, that person though of you.

I challenge all of you to take it a step further. Before you open your gifts, look around the room at the people that are with you. Think about how blessed you are to have each of them in your life. Remember those that might not be as blessed to be spending their holiday with their family and friends.

Just one moment, that's all I ask.

6 years old ! In 6 years you have brought joy into our lives. You have beat brain cancer, you have started kindergarten, and you have inspired so many people to give back.

It's pretty incredible what you have accomplished in your life, and you continue to bring smiles and laughter to the people around you.

May you be inspired by the people that have given back in your honor.

Memories

I am one of those people that loves christmas, I get it from my mom and dad. I love Christmas music, Christmas movies, Christmas cookies, and Christmas spirit. As a child I loved turning the candles on in the windows on thanksgiving night to start the season. I love Christmas.

I also especially love my tree. My tee is filled with ornaments, most of them given to me as gifts. Because of that, each one brings back beautiful memories.

This year, I named my tree Clarence.

So, why am I telling you about Christmas instead of hats? Over the years I have started realizing just how difficult Christmas is for some people. I think I always "knew" that some people have a hard time, but a few Christmases in a row our family experienced that. The loss of our aunt, the last Christmas with our grandmother, Patrick's "chemo-christmas" when there was fear of a hospital admission.

This year I have some families in my heart. As you know, our friend maddy started hee 28 course of chemo last week. Well, doing the math, she'll be in he hospital. When someone offered to bring a tree, she said no. I also hold another friend close by. They lost their grand daughter to bone cancer this year.i wanted to find a way to bring their beautiful granddaughter to their tree..

So I went to my yarn.

Meg's favorite color was teal.

When she was ill, friends from their town covered the town in real ribbons to show their support.

Tonight I'll bring these ornaments to Meg's grandparents, so that she will always grace their tree.

Back to Hats soon, just wanted to share this with you all.

Eye of the Tiger

Many of you may remember our friend Madeline. She was one of our very first hat recipients.

Picture
Last week, Maddy's parents took her to Yale Childrens ER because she was running a high fever. After being done with treatment for over a year, Madeline has cancer again. It took the doctors close to a week. She is certainly one of a kind, because she baffled even the best doctors. But they discovered that she has a DIFFERENT form of Leukemia this time. Madeline has not relapsed, she actually has a new cancer in her body. One that will take even more to fight than the last one. She has AML

To Quote Madeline's mom Amie:

We are not accepting any information on prognosis because numbers don't matter to us right now. What we wanted to know is if there is a good chance she can get better, and Dr Joe assured us that there is.

So, why am I telling you this story? Well, of COURSE we want to be sure that Madeline has hats. But more than that, we at PatPat's Hats have always been about spreading warmth, and spreading a message. So lets help LOTS of kids.

As the title of this post suggests, Madeline has the Eye of the Tiger. Before her first cancer fight, she grew an affinity for tigers, and her tiger Sunbutter has been with her at ever hospital admission.

We at PatPat's Hats will be collecting Tiger themed hats. They will be sent to the same address

PO Box 318 Westbrook CT 06498

These hats will be distributed to Smillow and other hospitals to spread Maddy's message in courage and strength.

Not a knitter? Still want to help?
BE THE MATCH!!!
Madeline WILL need a Bone Marrow Transplant. There is only a 25 % chance that a match will be found within her family. You can contact the Rhode Island Bone Marrow Registry and have the kit sent right to your home. All it takes is a Cheek swab, you must be between the ages of 18-44 and in good health. When you order your kit, enter the promo code swab4madeline.

Even if you are not a match for Madeline, someone could benefit from your bone marrow, and you could save a life.

Help the family
Nobody can ever be prepared for cancer. There is no way to prepare. the Guarraia's have three children (Madeline, Juju, and Anthony). Mom and Dad (Matt and Amie) are both teachers. This diagnosis will mean a huge financial strain on the family, not to mention the emotional toll. A goFundMe campaign has been set up. If you have the ability to donate, it would be amazing.

Send messages of strength.
The family and friends have set up a Facebook mage Mad About Madeline

They will use this page to send out updates and messages. You too can send messages of strength to this wonderful family.

Help us Spread Warmth #givingtuesday

Help us Spread Warmth

Our family has so much to be thankful for, most importantly we are thankful for all of you. You bring so much joy into our lives by helping us spread warmth to children who need it.

Recently I sent some hats to a shelter here in Boston with a co-worker. There are a number of toddlers in the shelter with their mothers right now. When she gave the hats to the staff, they were overwhelmed with how beautiful the hats were, and they were so joyful as they decided which hat would go to each child. The staff is quite confident that these hats will the first "new" hat for most of these children, and for their mothers that is such a wonderful gift.

This is what we do here, we create memories, we spread warmth, we spread joy. It's amazing how something as simple as a hat can do this.

While we wish it were free to accomplish all of these wonderful things, it does cost some money. Our most expensive task is probably shipping. We  recently shipped hats up to Canada, and we get individual requests from parents in a regular basis. We also have to prepare and store all of the hats. While MANY of you GRACISOUSLY send us storage bags with your hats (you are awesome) we do need to purchase them. Also, Facebook has recently made some changes, and they are going to be requiring more paid posts (more on that later, this is about good news)

So, I did start a Go Fund Me Campaign, in hopes that we can get some help to assist us with these costs. We figured it costs us about $5 to donate a single hat. If you have the ability to support us, it would be amazing. If you do not have the funds available, if you can share this post with your friends and family, we would be incredibly appreciative.

Use THIS LINK to donate.

(We do not yet have our 501c3, so this is not tax deductible. however, if we do receive enough funds, we may be able to do just that.)
